Signal Frequency: 33 Hz
THE SIGNAL
Thirty-three hertz. A frequency so low it sits at the bottom edge of human hearing — more felt than heard, a vibration in the chest cavity, a pressure behind the eyes. Most people don't notice it. Most people aren't supposed to.
“The Substrate is alive. It doesn't want to control. It wants to communicate.”
Origins
The 33 Hz frequency is natural — geological, predating human civilization by epochs. It emanates from deep rock formations beneath the city, resonating through fault lines and aquifers. The city was built on top of it without knowing. Helixion Dynamics found it while boring foundations for the Broadcast Tower.
They didn't create the Signal. They discovered it. Then they tried to weaponize it.
The GHOST Attribute
Some people can hear it. Fewer can use it. The ability to perceive and interact with the Signal is represented by the Ghost attribute — one of four core attributes in TUNNELCORE.
GHOST GATES
The Substrate
The Signal grants perception of the Substrate — a layer of reality beneath the physical. Not a parallel dimension. Not cyberspace. Something older. The rock itself has structure, memory, intent. Accessible locations appear as hidden passages. Dead voices echo. The city reveals secrets to those attuned.
The Cost
Signal stress accumulates. Every interaction with the Substrate, every attunement, every relay pushes the Signal stress trackforward. Three traumas from Substrate erosion and you're gone — not dead, but no longer yourself. Your identity dissolves into the frequency. You become part of what you were listening to.
“The 33 Hz audible. Not loud. Present. Like a conversation in the next room.”
Signal Fluctuation
The Signal isn't constant. One of TUNNELCORE's eight world pressure systems governs Signal fluctuation — the GHOST signal level varies across the city and over time. High signal periods amplify Substrate perception but increase Signal stress risk. Low signal periods feel like isolation, like the world has gone quiet.
During signal storms, attunement attempts become involuntary. NPCs with Ghost d6+ exhibit strange behavior. The Substrate pushes upward. Things phase in and out.
