Living Rock. Geological Intelligence.
THE SUBSTRATE
Beneath the city, beneath the drainage tunnels and maintenance corridors, beneath the abandoned transit lines and industrial foundations, the rock changes. It stops being infrastructure and starts being something else. The 33 Hz frequency reaches source strength here. The Substrate is alive — not biologically, but in a way that defies every category humanity has built to understand the world.
“The 33 Hz audible. Not loud. Present. Like a conversation in the next room.”
Access
Reaching the Substrate Level (Zone 14) requires a Ghost attribute of d8 or higher. Below that threshold, the passages don't reveal themselves — not locked, not hidden, simply imperceptible. The rock looks solid to those who can't hear what it's saying.
The descent begins through known entry points in the Drainage Nexus and Maintenance Tunnels. Signal taps mark the way — crude devices hammered into the stone by Signal faction members, amplifying the frequency for those following behind.
Geography
Liquid mineral accumulation. The Substrate equivalent of a hearth. Warm, still, humming.
Where organic material pushes through infrastructure. Not plant. Not stone. Something between.
Natural cavities where the frequency is strongest. Shaped by millennia of resonance. Standing here changes perception permanently.
The Inhabitants
Two known individuals have made the Substrate their home — or been claimed by it:
Resonance
Partially merged with the Substrate. Speaks in frequencies as much as words. No longer entirely human, not yet entirely stone. The transition is ongoing.
Drift
A listener at source. Losing track of surface time. Days pass that feel like minutes. Minutes that feel like geological ages. Still human. For now.
Helixion's Secret
Helixion knows. Their classified Project Remembererhas documented evidence that the Substrate exhibits intelligence — pattern recognition, adaptive response, what could be interpreted as communication attempts. Virek suspects it's alive. He hasn't shared this because it threatens everything he's built.
The Broadcast Tower's foundations touch the Substrate. This is not an accident. When the Tower reaches 100%, it will either amplify the Signal to everyone — or sever the connection permanently. The Signal faction believes it's the latter. They may be right.
“The Substrate has been warning humanity. The Broadcast Tower will sever the connection permanently.”
